The LCD television is hung on the wall with the wall mount bracket

Flat Screen TV Installed on Wall Mount Bracket

The wall mount bracket for the installation of your plasma or LCD TV is a good way to clear up space in any room. You choose where you want the television to be hung and the wall bracket is installed there.

Installing A TV Wall Bracket For A Plasma Or A Flat Screen LCD TV

Research TV Mounting Brackets

The first step is to make sure that you get the right bracket for the right TV. Some things to consider are:

  • Fixed or moveable: Fixed brackets are cheaper than moveable brackets. Moveable wall mounts can rotate, tilt, swivel, move up and down, etc.
  • How big of a mount do you need: The larger the TV, the larger the mount, which means that it will cost more
  • How long will you have that TV: The mount will be good for not only that TV but also any new LCD or Plasma Flat Panel that you may purchase, so make a good investment

Choosing the Correct Mounting Brackets

All of the brackets out there and the backs of LCD Flat Panel/Plasma TV's should be Video Electronics Standards Association or VESA compliant. VESA is an organization that initiates standards for electronic equipment so if it is VESA compliant then it should fit. Still, be sure to measure the distance between the mounting points to be sure that it will work. Also, be sure that you know whether you want a fixed or movable bracket. Movable can mean swivel, tilt, vertical, horizontal or a combination of these.

Where to Install the Mounting Brackets

Deciding where to mount the TV is very important as it will be the center piece of your wall. Equally important are the ergonomics of the TV placement as you should not have to strain to watch the big game. The brackets should be placed where the center of the TV will be eye level when sitting straight up. If this seems too low when you stand next to it then raise it up to where the top is eye level when you are standing next to it and the bottom is eye level when sitting.

Cables and Wires

The common thing to do with cables is to run them through the wall. While this looks good, it is not generally compliant with electric building code and can be a pain if you want to put in a new TV with new cable or add a new device to your entertainment system. If you do decide to run wire through the wall, be sure to have a licensed electrician do it for you. The other options are to place some sort of obstacle under the television to hide the cable or camouflage it. A couple ways to do this is to create some sort of molding that would hide them underneath and paint it the same color as the wall or paint the cords the same color as the wall.

Finishing Mounting Your LCD/Plasma Flat Panel

Be sure to check these things before letting go:

  • That the bracket is screwed into studs
  • That the bracket is securely fastened to the back of the TV
  • That the bracket can bear the weight of the TV
